Cabinet Painting Guide: Durable & Stunning Results

Cabinet painting is more popular than ever, and it’s no surprise. If your cabinets are solid and in good condition, painting offers a cost-effective makeover that dramatically elevates your kitchen’s aesthetic. And compared to a full remodel, it’s a breeze—less mess, less downtime, and dramatically less cost. While a remodeling job can close your kitchen for weeks, professional cabinet painting (like what we offer at A.G. Williams Painting Company) wraps up in just days, with stunning results that last for years.

In this cabinet painting guide, we’ll explore one of the most common homeowner questions: “Are painted cabinets durable?” We’ll also walk you through our trusted painting process—from prep to finish.

Are Painted Kitchen Cabinets Durable?

Yes—cabinet painting can absolutely be durable, but only if done the right way. When done properly using high-quality materials and a careful, multi-step process, painted cabinets can look factory-fresh and stand up to daily wear.

That said, two common issues give painted cabinets a bad reputation:

  1. DIY attempts.YouTube and HGTV can make things look simple, but without the right prep, equipment, and technique, paint can chip, peel, or look uneven in just months.
  2. Inexperienced painters. It’s tempting to choose the cheapest bid, but a low-cost provider without cabinet-specific experience often cuts corners—leading to hidden costs, rework, and frustration.

The key? Skill, dedication, and top-notch materials. At A.G. Williams Painting Company, we treat cabinet painting like a craft. We don’t cut corners and only hire skilled sprayers who train for years.

Ask your painter these essential questions before hiring:

  • What primer and paint products do you use?
  • Do you spray or brush/roll the cabinets? Why?
  • How do you prepare, sand, and clean before painting?
  • Can I see photos or references of past cabinet projects?

Our Cabinet Painting Process (Step by Step)

When you work with A.G. Williams Painting Company, here’s exactly how we bring your cabinets back to life:

1.) Kitchen Turned Into a Spray Booth

We carefully mask off the kitchen with paper and plastic sheathing to protect walls, floors, appliances—basically everything. No overspray, no mess.

2.) Deep Clean & Sand

This step is essential. We deep clean every surface, removing grease, grime, and residue. Then we sand to eliminate the old finish and help the primer adhere properly.

3.) Remove Doors and Drawer Faces

To ensure flawless spray results, we remove all cabinet doors and drawer fronts. These are taken to a controlled environment—could be your garage, basement, or even our portable spray tent outside.

4.) Primer Application

We use an alkyd-based, stain-blocking primer, applied with high-quality spray equipment. This prime coat blocks stains, ensures adhesion, and builds a strong base.

5.) Sanding Between Coats

After primer dries, we sand again for a smooth surface free of imperfections.

6.) First Coat of Paint

Using a high-performance, low-VOC cabinet paint, we apply the first spray coat under controlled conditions to avoid dust and ensure even coverage.

7.) Sand Again

We always do one more round of very fine sanding after the initial coat, ensuring a silky, flawless surface.

8.) Second Paint Coat & Reinstall

We apply the second and final coat, reinstall doors and drawers, then do a quick round of spray touch-ups to any spots that need perfecting.

Fun Fact:We have over 70 painters on our team—and only 5 certified cabinet sprayers. Getting top-tier cabinet finishes takes years of training and dedication.
